Why hire a professional painter-decorator
Most people think painting and decorating is easy. To a certain extent it is. But our trade is based on quality of finish, not just “painting” over things. That’s why hiring an professional painter-decorator is essential to achieve the required result.
Preparation and Product Knowledge
The real secret to achieving an excellent result, is based on your level of preparation. This is a thorough understanding of products and product selection and how they should be applied. This comes with trying and testing products and these products change all time.
I shall give you an example of what I mean: An electrician I know did the decorating in his own hallway. When I came round to view his hallway he claimed how badly the paint had reacted on the woodwork. Within 10 seconds of looking at his woodwork, I knew exactly what he had done wrong. He continued to claim the paint was at fault. This was not the case. He had simply forgot to prepare the woodwork correctly, resulting in the new paint covering coming off in strips.
Now with him being an electrician and working alongside experienced trades person like myself, (painter-decorator) you would have thought he would have a good, general knowledge. This just goes to show it’s not as easy as he thought it was. As I can change a plug, or put up a light fitting, this does not qualify me as an electrician.
He decided to forego the preparation process and for me to put the fault right, cost him dear. The new paint system had to be removed, then the underlying paint system had to sanded down, adhesion primer had to be applied which allowed for the top coats over the top.
The right tools for the right job
Due to health and safety concerns, water based paints have replaced oil based in the majority of cases. We still use oil based on external work as this has a better life span overall. Some decorators still prefer oil based indoors, but I find they believe you can’t achieve a good enough finish with water based as you can with oil. To a certain extent they’re right, but the benefit of water based I believe outweighs the finish, especially when sprayed.
We also use dust extractors attached to our sanders. This allows for the safe extraction of dust from the surface and atmosphere. It also helps in keeping the work environment much cleaner and therefore keeps clearing up to a minimum.
Another reason to employ a professional painter-decorator is that DIY enthusiasts cannot achieve the same level of finish. It takes years of practice and understanding products and techniques to get the required professional finish. I’ve run out of fingers and toes to count how many times people have contacted me, because someone claiming to be a professional painter-decorator have completely messed up a job.
The saying “If you pay cheap, you pay twice” is never so truer in our industry. People looking for cheap job, get a cheap finish. That’s fine if that’s all they want to achieve. But most people pay their hard earned money out for cheap job are disappointed.
Do yourself the biggest favour you can and hire a professional painter-decorator for your next project.
